case studies - stories:

“The people at Stepping UP were very practical and helpful – they really helped me to get this job.”

Jane had come to the UK from Nigeria , where she had some experience of teaching. A mother of new-born twins Jane took part in a work placement at Hackney Primary School . During the School holidays Jane spent time working at a Hackney Adventure Playground and a youth centre.

Stepping UP worked with Jane to identify the right placement, the appropriate training, obtain a National Insurance number and apply for Working Family Tax Credit. We provided training to help develop the life skills associated with employment. We helped her to develop her CV and enhance application forms.

Jane is now working as a Play Assistant for the Learning Trust in after school clubs throughout Hackney. She is studying for an NVQ Level 2 in Play and is undertaking a Teaching Assistants course.

“The support from Stepping UP helped me get the job I want…”

Mark O came to Stepping UP to help find a job in finance.   Following an initial interview Mark was able to access the Stepping UP Resource Room. We

worked with him to enhance his CV, search for jobs in finance and evaluate his

current skills and experience, matching them to a job of his choice. Following

various interviews Mark succeeded in finding employment as a credit controller.

“Stepping Up works... It’s helped me find the best job”.

Peter T responded to outreach and advertising for our Employment Preparation

Workshops. He was looking for a part-time job so that he could undertake further

training, helping him pursue a career in housing.

Peter attended the CV and Interview Technique workshops. He then found out about a vacancy with a very short deadline. Before the deadline Peter attended our Job Application Form workshop – helping him enhance his application.

Grateful for the advice and support from Stepping UP Peter says the workshops made him more aware of what employers were looking for. Peter got the Job as Neighbourhood Warden

“The support I received from ‘Stepping Up’ gave me the confidence to believe in myself and move forward.”

Susan read about ‘Stepping Up’ and contacted us to take part in the Intermediate Labour Market work experience project.

Susan originally came to the UK from San Salvador . She had been teaching Spanish to children in the UK , on a voluntary basis for several years and wanted to be a Teaching Assistant. She had applied for positions in the past at various schools which had been unsuccessful.

Stepping UP worked with Susan to establish a placement in the nursery at Northwold School . Pleased with the work Susan did on her placement she was offered full time employment and additional training as a Special Needs Assistant starting in September. Susan acknowledges the input from Stepping UP

“Stepping UP helped me think through my career and work out my direction. They also helped with my training…”

Brian had been out of work, and was uncertain of the direction of his career and what he really wanted to do. He had worked in a voluntary capacity as a football coach with young people. Brian wanted to train as a Youth Worker. We helped him find a placement at a youth centre.

The placement experience was useful and enabled Brian to develop youth work skills. He realized that he wanted to pursue a career as a Youth Worker. With support from Stepping UP Brian has indentified further training and is now being employed by other youth projects.
