about volunteering

We think that volunteers are vital. This is partly because volunteers help to shape and sustain vital community development work, which make a radical difference locally! We also think the Hackney Marsh Partnership can provide opportunities which enable people to make new friends, grow their skills and develop a range of experiences.

In short it is good news all round!

All volunteers with Hackney Marsh Partnership have chosen to take on responsibility for an aspect of work and life developing in one of our projects. It is important to recognise this commitment! It is important there is a positive environment in the Hackney Marsh Partnership projects specifically for people to discover their significance, and then if appropriate to work it out in the context of a project or initiative.

We work hard to support to our volunteers. This is about:

  • encouraging professional development
  • recognising an important contribution
  • affirming uniqueness, value and importance

We are not led by volunteers. (Sorry. We don't recruit volunteers first and then find work for them later). Instead the Hackney Marsh Partnership identifies areas of work which require volunteer input. Volunteers are recruited for existing projects or to establish strategic initiatives.

All volunteers are encouraged to participate and be involved fully in the life and development of projects and services as well as the Hackney Marsh Partnership community.

We are committed to developing ways which enable volunteers to imprint themselves, (their ideas, personality, style and 'fingerprints') on the place.

There are various motivations and reasons why people volunteer these include:

  • the work is connected with interests and needs
  • the work aims to improve the local community and help people
  • through the work it is possible to meet people and make friends
  • the work provides the opportunity to learn new skills
  • people wish to 'give something back' to their community
  • the work provides an opportunity to improve English skills
  • the work may eneable people to gain valuable experience, to assist in finding paid work

Whatever the reason or motivation, we want to find out what people want from

volunteering. We will work to support the volunteer in achieving this, matching the volunteer with the right work.

We are working to integrate our ethos and values into every stage of the recruitment and selection process of volunteers. Oour Equal Opportunities Policy is at the centre of the recruitment process.
