Providing legal advice in the Kingsmead estate offers a unique perspective of community life. It also illustrates how the advice, casework and advocacy we provide impacts on those it serves. Staff at East Hackney LAW have both the legal expertise and an understanding of the local community to be able to provide this vital resource.
People often have a surprisingly accurate sense of what is right, wrong or simply unfair. We provide a free, independent, confidential and impartial advice service with contacts and networks with other agencies in the borough and beyond that can help if we can't.
We provide free advice on legal issues relating to benefits, housing, rent, employment, education and welfare rights.
We all have to deal with organisations to arrange our day-to-day affairs such as financial institutions, local authorities and benefits agencies. When dealing with such large establishments, they can operate in ways that can discriminate against the individual or whole sections of society or groups. This may not be in an obvious way, but in a way that has a serious impact, nonetheless.
At East Hackney LAW we believe that by providing people with information about their legal rights, choices and options, they become empowered. This means taking time to ensure that people fully understand their own legal obligations as well. This encourages people to deal with individuals, large companies, corporations and government departments with confidence and therefore more effectively.
East Hackney LAW is able to assist people to produce the positive outcomes to improve their circumstances or their quality of life. We record the many instances of success. They include highlighting unfair practices by the local authority or employers, increasing income and reducing debt, or assisting clients to get their landlord to carry out crucial repairs.
