. about the community food project - the best thing since sliced bread? Access to quality fresh fruit and vegetables is important as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. However, fresh fruit and vegetables are also expensive and heavy to carry. Estates in East Hackney (including Kingsmead, Sherry's Wharf, Trowbridge and Clapton Park) are located nearest to New Spitalfields - the largest fruit, vegetable and flower market in Europe. People on Kingsmead estate and the surrounding area are working with Community Development at Hackney Marsh Partnership, East London Food Access (ELFA), health visitors, dieticians and Kingsmead School to develop the Kingsmead Food Project. The aim is to develop a service which enables local people to buy good quality fruit and vegetables. Being close to New Spitalfields Market, you could be forgiven for thinking this would be easy. But this project presents its own unique challenges. Setting up the food co-op involves establishing a project which has the capacity to move bulk quantities of foodstuff around, distributing at local centres in East Hackney. There are also Co-ops at Navarino Mansions and haggerston Communtiy Centre. We also want to move the project from grant dependency to a more sustainable community enterprise. This project will take time (and to begin with an element of funding). Local volunteers involved with this initiative are working with Hackney Marsh Partnership Community Development and East London Food Access (ELFA) to develop a long-term sustainable access to high quality, affordable fruit and vegetables. As the lead partner we have also brought in Kingsmead School, the Health Visitors and Community Dieticians. We're very grateful for the support from the School - we couldn't do it without you!
